.The word "abstract" has many meanings. I use it in the sense of "extract" as one challenge of any new art is to reduce it to its simplest forms. Cezanne said to "deal with nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone, all placed in perspective, so that each side of an object or a plane is directed towards a central point." In relief I often begin by first complicating a scene and then trying to simplify. One avenue of my relief exploration is to find or create simple geometric forms that create illusions of other forms. Here are photos of some reliefs that are steps along the path to simplicity, from my early attempts forward in time.
