Almost as soon as I transitioned from Realist Painting to Relief in 1975 I began to sculpt abstract reliefs. In order to compose realist images in relief, it is necessary to cope with interlocking surface forms. Exploring and creating images of simple abstract/geometric forms is a way of building a relief vocabulary that can be used in Realist Relief and to explore the visual landscape between two and three dimensions.
