For over 48 years I have been artistically exploring the medium of relief, which I conceive as the visual landscape existing between 2 and 3 dimensions. Here are photos of some of my over 1,500 reliefs that are steps into a new visual landscape that I am still exploring every day.
My 1975 - early 1980 reliefs needed fixed lighting from the lower left. By the mid 1980's I had succeeded in making reliefs which could be lit in various directions. Starting in 1996 I have concentrated on intaglio reliefs made by casting "negative" paper-plaster reliefs off of "positive" paper-clay tablets. The camera reads them as positive; the human eye is challenged by the relief's familiar subject (its gestalt) created by an unfamiliar surface.
