In April 2020I did a medium sized colored relief (20"x30"x2") entitled, "View from Quarantine" based on a charcoal sketch I did a few months ago. Vertical and horizontal bars had begun making their appearance in 2019 in connection with fracturing the surface of my reliefs into smaller segments as a way to increase apparent depth without increasing the actual depth of my reliefs.
The psychological implications of vertical bars only became apparent with the advent of Covid 19.. Here is a slide show of the relief in progress. Various watercolors were added early on, refreshed during carving, and transferred from the clay to the plaster cast.
Once the piece was cast it's image reversed horizontally. Additional watercolor was added to the cast al fresco. Some small cracks were repaired and the relief overglazed with watercolor and acrylic, using different blue and orange hues to further differentiate foreground from background.
